AWS Will Resell OpenAI After Microsoft Ends Exclusivity

The shift moves enterprise access to OpenAI from Azure-only to a competitive multi‑cloud path.

Overview

  • Amazon said it will, for the first time, resell OpenAI products on its AWS cloud after Microsoft ended its exclusive commercial license with the AI lab.
  • TechRepublic reports that OpenAI recently closed a $122 billion funding round valuing the company at $852 billion, with about $50 billion from Amazon, including $15 billion upfront and $35 billion tied to conditions.
  • OpenAI said it would spend an additional $100 billion on AWS computing power, according to the report, creating tight commercial links between the model provider and the cloud.
  • The outlet reports that some of Amazon’s contingent payments may have depended on ending Microsoft’s exclusivity and that OpenAI and Amazon had discussed bringing GPT to Alexa, which remains unconfirmed.
  • AWS had leaned on other AI partners during Microsoft’s exclusive era, including Anthropic, AI21, Stability AI, and later Meta, with Anthropic saying more than 100,000 customers use Claude on Amazon Bedrock.
