AWS Confirms Drone Strikes Damaged Data Centers in UAE and Bahrain

Recovery will be prolonged as AWS directs customers to shift workloads to other regions.

Overview

  • AWS said two facilities in the United Arab Emirates were directly hit and a nearby strike in Bahrain caused physical impacts to infrastructure.
  • Structural damage, power loss and fire-suppression water damage left UAE availability zones mec1-az2 and mec1-az3 significantly impaired and Bahrain’s mes1-az2 facing a localized power issue.
  • The company is pursuing software-based recovery paths, working with local authorities and warning that operations in the Middle East remain unpredictable.
  • Customers were urged to execute disaster-recovery plans, restore from remote backups and migrate workloads to unaffected regions in the United States, Europe or Asia Pacific.
  • Service disruptions have affected regional apps and financial services, with firms including Careem, Alaan, Hubpay, ADCB, Emirates NBD and Snowflake reporting issues tied to the outages.
