AVM Launches FritzBox 7632 and Confirms FritzOS 8.20 Slowdown on Some Flagship Routers

AVM attributes the slowdowns to a hardware‑acceleration flaw under FritzOS 8.20 on setups using external fiber modems.

Overview

  • The new FritzBox 7632 is on sale for €269 with Wi‑Fi 7 over 2.4/5 GHz, G.fast up to 1 Gbit/s and VDSL 35b up to 300 Mbit/s, plus a 2.5‑Gbit/s WAN/LAN port, three 1‑Gbit/s LAN ports, USB 3.0, DECT telephony and smart‑home support.
  • The final FritzOS 8.20 is rolling out to models including the 7690 and 5690 Pro, adding a redesigned online monitor, smarter Mesh path selection, FritzNAS link sharing, FritzFailsafe and expanded energy controls.
  • Following the update, users of the 7690 and 5690 Pro operating behind external ONTs report sharp throughput losses and unstable latency despite high sync rates.
  • AVM confirms the issue appears only with Paketbeschleunigung (hardware packet acceleration) enabled and advises disabling it via Help & Info > FritzBox Support > Paketbeschleunigung, though the setting resets after a reboot.
  • A laboratory build for the 7690 (e.g., 8.24) is available to address the regression, an official fix is planned, and AVM says direct DSL connections do not show performance changes.
