Avalanches in Italy and Nepal Kill 14 Climbers as Rescues Continue

Rescue operations continue under worsening mountain weather.

Overview

  • On Cima Vertana in Italy’s Ortles massif, five German alpinists, including a 17-year-old, were found dead after two roped parties were swept near the summit.
  • Italian mountain rescue teams said searches were hampered by deteriorating conditions and warned of additional snowfall above 2,400 meters in the coming days.
  • In Nepal’s east, an avalanche on Yalung Ri carried away 12 people at a camp area, leaving seven dead, including three Italians, a German, a French climber and two Nepalis, according to the organizer and local police.
  • A separate incident in western Nepal on Panbari killed Italian climbers Stefano Farronato and Alessandro Caputo, with a third team member rescued by helicopter.
  • French survivors Isabelle Thaon and Didier Berton described the Yalung Ri avalanche and identified the French victim as Christian Manfredi, 69, as officials reported recovery efforts continuing with helicopter access constrained by recent storms linked to Cyclone Montha.
