Autopsy Finds No External Trauma in Death of South Carolina Trainer Elena Moore

Investigators are awaiting toxicology, microscopic tissue studies and medical records to determine how she died.

Overview

  • Moore was captured on surveillance leaving a Planet Fitness on June 11 and was reported missing by her husband the next day before a body matching her clothing was found in woods on June 17 after a public tip.
  • A preliminary forensic autopsy conducted at the Medical University of South Carolina did not identify an immediate cause of death and found no bruising, lacerations, gunshot wounds, stab wounds, blunt force trauma, strangulation or other external injuries.
  • The Lexington County Coroner’s Office said the cause and manner of death remain pending while toxicology results, microscopic tissue (histology) testing and a review of Moore’s medical records are completed.
  • Neighbors and friends described unusual behavior in the weeks before she vanished, including episodes of apparent confusion and a close friend’s claim that Moore said she was 'scared for her life,' but those accounts are leads that investigators have not publicly verified.
  • Lexington police, with SLED assistance, say the investigation is active, the husband is not considered a suspect, and officials are using surveillance, phone‑data requests and witness interviews as they await lab results that could take days to weeks and change the case’s direction.
