Autopsy Confirms Homicide in Northfield Police Shooting of 27-Year-Old Woman

State investigators plan to question the firing officer next, with video held back pending review.

Overview

  • Police were called to 20 Vine Street after a 12:12 a.m. Monday 911 report that Megan Whiting was hitting a resident with a fire extinguisher and breaking property.
  • Officers arrived about six minutes later and, after repeated orders to drop a knife near an injured woman, one officer fired and struck Whiting.
  • Emergency crews responded quickly, and Whiting was pronounced dead at the scene after officers moved the injured resident to safety and secured the knife.
  • An autopsy found multiple gunshot wounds and ruled the manner of death a homicide, which means one person caused another’s death and does not by itself determine a crime.
  • The attorney general’s office has not released officer identities, will interview the shooter in the coming days, and is withholding body-camera footage, while reporting no other officer or civilian injuries and keeping the injured resident’s condition private; in New Hampshire, the AG typically leads police-shooting reviews to ensure independence from local departments.
