Autopsy Confirms Fatal Carotid Wound in Cosquín Dog Attack on 4-Year-Old

Investigators now probe the attack’s trigger, including the dog’s status.

Overview

  • The 4-year-old was mauled in a vacant lot across from Cosquín’s cemetery on Wednesday around midday, and she died at the scene despite CPR by medics, police, local guards and firefighters.
  • An official autopsy found hypovolemic shock, or massive blood loss, from a neck wound that cut the left carotid artery, with 14 deep injuries to the head and neck and 18 superficial abrasions.
  • The case is led by the Cosquín Second Shift Prosecutor’s Office under Silvana Pen, and the forensic findings have been added to the judicial file.
  • Authorities have not established whether the mestizo dog had an owner, and the inquiry is focused on how the encounter started.
  • Witnesses describe a dog often seen loose and fed by neighbors, and a leading theory holds it attacked while eating when the child came close.
