Automatic CNH Renewals Roll Out Across Brazil, States Cap Exam Fees as Ministry Investigates Overcharges

Overview

• The federal Programa Bom Condutor entered continuous operation on Jan. 9, updating eligible drivers’ licenses in the CNH Brasil app without exams or fees for those enrolled in the RNPC and free of infractions in the prior 12 months.
• The Transport Ministry opened an administrative procedure to check compliance with the federal ceiling of R$180 for combined medical and psychological exams after reports in Rio Branco found charges reaching R$326.54.
• Sergipe began enforcing the cap on Jan. 13, setting up to R$80 for the medical exam and up to R$100 for the psychological evaluation, while São Paulo limited each exam to R$90.
• Detran-RJ reports automatic renewals are underway and says drivers who already paid fees can request refunds; automatic PPD-to-CNH updates also apply to qualifying drivers.
