Automakers Book $2.3 Billion in Tariff Refunds as Ford Lifts Outlook

The paper gains rest on Supreme Court-ordered refunds pending a Customs payout process.

Overview

  • Several automakers, which recorded expected refunds this week, tallied about $2.3 billion after a February Supreme Court ruling voided some duties imposed under the 1977 emergency-powers law known as IEEPA.
  • Ford booked a $1.3 billion benefit and raised its 2026 profit outlook to $8.5 billion to $10.5 billion, while trimming its expected tariff bill for the year to $1 billion.
  • General Motors expects about $500 million back, Mercedes-Benz recorded an expected refund, and Stellantis booked roughly €400 million on Thursday.
  • The companies say no cash has arrived and they will not count any refund as free cash flow until U.S. Customs completes a process that could take several months.
  • Political and operational risks remain, as President Trump warned he would “remember” firms that skip claims and other tariffs on steel, aluminum and North American trade still raise costs.
