Austria Snowstorm Kills Five With Deadly Tyrol Avalanches as Vienna Airport Restarts

Officials warn of days of elevated avalanche danger for off-piste skiers.

Overview

  • Four skiers died in Tyrol, including three in a large slide near St Anton and a German father in Nauders whose 16-year-old son was seriously injured, bringing this winter’s avalanche toll to 21.
  • Police said a 53-year-old man was killed by a snowplow in Linz in a separate storm-related incident.
  • Vienna International Airport paused flights in the morning, then resumed operations on a gradual basis with takeoffs around 12:00 and landings from 13:00, and delays continuing.
  • Electric utilities reported outages across southern and eastern regions, including about 30,000 homes without power in Styria, while Vienna saw multiple traffic accidents reported by the OAMTC.
  • Snowfall reached 10–30 cm in many areas, with about 20 cm at the airport, as crews removed roughly 1,000 truckloads (about 15,000 tons) using more than 200 staff and over 100 specialized vehicles.
