Austria Passes Anti-Shrinkflation Law Requiring 60-Day Notices in Large Stores

Enforcement begins in April 2026 with fines for repeated breaches.

Overview

  • The obligation targets stationary food and drug retailers with more than 400 m² of sales area or over five outlets.
  • From April 1, 2026, a clear sign must be shown at the product, shelf, or nearby for 60 days, for example, “Attention: Less content — higher price.”
  • Exemptions apply when manufacturers clearly indicate the reduced quantity on the pack or when the unit-price change is below 3%.
  • Violations can trigger penalties up to €15,000, and the measure is time-limited until mid-2030.
  • The governing coalition and the Greens backed the bill, the FPÖ voted against it, trade bodies warn of added bureaucracy, and Rewe’s Billa has already been labeling such items voluntarily since January.
