Overview

  • The case, which opened Tuesday in Wiener Neustadt, centers on 21-year-old Beran Aliji, whose lawyer says he will admit the Taylor Swift concert plot.
  • Prosecutors say he planned to breach security by driving a VW Beetle with a fake police siren into crowds, then set off an explosive hidden in a drinks can and carry out knife attacks.
  • Investigators report he pledged allegiance to Islamic State in July 2024, obtained IS bomb guides, made a small amount of the explosive TATP, and tried to buy firearms and a grenade on the black market.
  • Police arrested him in August 2024 after a reported U.S. intelligence tip, and Vienna canceled three Ernst Happel Stadium shows a day before opening night to protect fans.
  • A co-defendant identified as Arda K is also on trial over separate alleged plots linked to the group, and a German teenager who helped translate bomb manuals earlier received an 18‑month suspended sentence.
