Australia’s Speartooth Undersea Drone Delivered and Christened for U.S.

The delivery signals a shift toward many lower-cost, modular undersea vehicles overseen by human operators.

Overview

  • C2 Robotics commissioned and christened the first Speartooth large uncrewed undersea vehicle for the United States on Friday, marking entry into U.S. use and evaluation.
  • At an Australian ceremony officiated by U.S. Naval Attaché Captain Josh Fagan, a robotic arm performed the christening under human control to showcase the program’s oversight model.
  • Speartooth is built for modular intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and strike missions under a “Small, Smart, Many” approach that aims to field numerous lower-cost subs.
  • The 8-meter vehicle uses a hybrid lithium‑ion and diesel system with an electric propeller and, per company data, can travel about 2,000 kilometers and dive to 2,000 meters.
  • The program advanced through Australian Defence funding, Royal Australian Navy trials, and Thales Australia sonar integration, and the company says a European sale with Eurobotics GmbH will be announced soon.
