Australia Tracks Chinese Task Group in Philippine Sea as New Satellite Images Surface

Canberra will keep watch until the flotilla’s destination is clear.

Overview

  • Defence Minister Richard Marles confirmed the Australian Defence Force is monitoring a People's Liberation Army Navy task group in the Philippine Sea.
  • Private firm Starboard Maritime Intelligence released satellite imagery reporting a Landing Helicopter Dock, a destroyer, a frigate and a replenishment vessel about 260 nautical miles east of the Philippines.
  • Starboard says the replenishment ship acts as a mobile logistics hub carrying over 11,000 tons of fuel and stores, enabling a cruising range of more than 10,000 nautical miles.
  • Marles reiterated the government will not provide a running public commentary, and ministers noted the flotilla is some distance from Australia with its destination unknown.
  • Analysts described the amphibious deployment beyond the first island chain as unusual and highlighted there is no indication it is presently heading to Australia.
