Australia Selects Rolls-Royce MT30 to Power Up to 11 Mogami-Class Frigates

Common engines across new ships aim to cut integration risk.

Overview

  • Australia confirmed the Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine for its upgraded Mogami-class general-purpose frigates, covering a fleet of up to 11 ships.
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will build the first three frigates in Japan, with the lead ship due for delivery in 2029 and operational service starting in 2030.
  • The Australian variant pairs one MT30 with two diesel engines for roughly 70,000 horsepower, supporting speeds above 35 mph.
  • The frigates will use mtu Series 4000 diesel generator sets for onboard power, supplied by Rolls-Royce Power Systems through licensed partner Daihatsu InfinEarth.
  • The MT30 already serves with the UK, US, and South Korea, and it will also power Australia’s Hunter-class, creating propulsion commonality across major surface combatants.
