- On Wednesday July 29, 2026 Australia head coach Andrew McDonald told SEN radio that a return by Ben Stokes for the Ashes would be a “fairytale” and said an incoming England Test coach might try to persuade him.
- Stokes shocked the game by announcing his Test retirement in late June during the third Test at Trent Bridge after an off-field nightclub incident that led to a suspension and an investigation.
- Since leaving international Test cricket Stokes has resumed domestic duty for Durham and produced eye-catching scores, including an unbeaten 108 and a 73, which fuels talk of a possible reversal.
