Austin Sixth Street Shooting Kills 3, Wounds 14 as FBI Probes Possible Terror Link

A possible terrorism nexus is under FBI review based on indicators linked to the suspect.

Overview

  • Gunfire erupted just before 2 a.m. outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden on West Sixth Street, where the attacker fired from an SUV with a pistol, then parked and continued on foot with a rifle.
  • Predeployed officers and EMS reached the scene in roughly 57 seconds and three officers fatally shot the suspect as medics began treating victims.
  • Authorities reported three dead, including the gunman, and 14 wounded, with three patients initially listed in critical condition at local hospitals.
  • The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force joined the investigation after “indicators” were found on the suspect and in his vehicle; a bomb-squad check of the SUV found no explosives, and a pistol and rifle were recovered.
  • Law enforcement sources identified the suspect as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Senegal, as motive remains under investigation; in a separate incident, Detroit police reported two dead and two injured after a shooting at a funeral repast, now under a multiagency probe.
