Austin Police Name Suspect in Penske Truck Lot Killing After Deposit Dispute

Investigators say a dispute over a truck deposit preceded the shooting.

Overview

  • Officers went to the Penske truck lot on Tuscany Way after a 5:42 p.m. call Thursday, found William Rogers shot, and he died at a hospital at 6:52 p.m.
  • Police identified 28-year-old Javarus Crumpton as the suspect and said an argument over a rental deposit led to the gunfire.
  • Crumpton and a third coworker stayed at the scene and are cooperating with detectives.
  • No arrests or charges had been announced as of Friday, and the Travis County District Attorney’s office was notified.
  • Detectives are canvassing for witnesses and video, and tips can go to 512-974-TIPS or Capital Area Crime Stoppers for a reward up to $1,000; APD counts this as Austin’s 17th homicide of 2026, with a separate killing about 12 hours later raising the total to 18.
