Austin, Houston Transit Plan Weekend Shutdowns as Freeze Approaches

Officials cite safety concerns ahead of forecast icing.

Overview

  • Austin’s CapMetro will run final bus and train trips at 4 p.m. Saturday, with paratransit, on-demand pickup and bike-share also suspended.
  • CapMetro will maintain limited operations to move people to cold-weather shelters, including fare-free rides to One Texas Center on routes 1, 7, 10, 20, 30, 105, 142 and 801, with service reassessed midmorning each day.
  • Houston METRO will suspend bus, METROLift and curb2curb services around 9 p.m. Saturday through at least Monday, with METROLift limited to life-sustaining medical trips if conditions allow.
  • METRORail will operate on regular weekend schedules Saturday, then run at reduced frequency Sunday and Monday as METRO plans a broader reassessment by Tuesday.
  • Agencies urge riders to subscribe to official service alerts for updates, with 311 available to coordinate transportation to warming centers; forecasters expect subfreezing temperatures and localized ice, including up to about a quarter-inch in Austin.
