AUKUS Launches Undersea Drone Payload Program With 2027 Rollout

The project aims to protect seabed infrastructure using shared, interchangeable UUV payloads to accelerate allied undersea capabilities.

Overview

  • A trilateral AUKUS agreement announced May 30, 2026 formally launched the first Pillar Two signature project to develop payloads for uncrewed undersea vehicles, the defence ministers said in Singapore.
  • Ministers set a near-term delivery goal with the first UUV capabilities expected to enter service in 2027 to provide sensors, weapons and enabling systems.
  • The program will produce interchangeable payloads deployable across US, UK and Australian UUV fleets and will use shared standards and common control concepts to speed trilateral interoperability.
  • The UK pledged dedicated industry support, with a reported commitment of about £150 million and four innovation‑challenge winners sharing £3 million to develop command, control and teaming tech.
  • On Pillar One the partners agreed to streamline Australia’s Virginia‑class buy to three in‑service boats and to establish a Submarine Rotational Force‑West at HMAS Stirling with the first US rotation expected in 2027, while SSN‑AUKUS work continues toward the 2030s–2040s timeline.
