Audi Unveils Recreated 1935 Auto Union Lucca With Supercharged V16

The one-off rebuild signals a heritage showcase of prewar speed tech over any new record bid.

Overview

  • Audi presented the hand-built Auto Union Lucca in Lucca, where the 1935 original averaged 320.267 kph over a flying mile and peaked at 326.975 kph.
  • British specialist Crosthwaite & Gardiner rebuilt the one-off over more than three years using photographs and fragmentary 1930s drawings.
  • Modern validation measured a 0.43 drag coefficient, and the car weighs about 960 kg according to Audi.
  • Power comes from a recreated 6.0-liter supercharged V16 that Audi rates at 520 hp, though New Atlas cites 513 hp for the same engine.
  • A demonstration run is planned at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 9–12, with Audi emphasizing a heritage display rather than a top-speed attempt.
