Audi RS5 Returns as 639-HP Plug-In Hybrid With New Torque-Vectoring Rear Axle

The plug-in RS5 uses a reworked 2.9-liter V6 with a gearbox motor to claim 639 hp with more than 50 miles of electric range.

Overview

  • Audi unveiled the RS5 in sedan (liftback) and Avant forms, consolidating the roles of the outgoing RS4 Avant and previous RS5 models as the A5 lineup’s performance flagship.
  • Combined system output is quoted at 639 hp and about 825 Nm, delivering 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and up to 285 km/h with the optional Audi Sport package.
  • A 25.9 kWh battery (about 22 kWh usable) enables a claimed 80–87 km electric-only range under EAER, with AC charging up to 11 kW and no DC fast-charging capability.
  • Audi debuts Dynamic Torque Control, an electromechanical rear-axle torque-vectoring system it calls a production-car first, complemented by a limited-slip center differential and an RS torque rear mode.
  • German prices start at €106,200 for the sedan and €107,850 for the Avant, kerb weight rises to roughly 2,355–2,370 kg, and boot space in the Avant is reduced due to the battery; orders open this summer with U.S. plans to be announced.
