Overview
- Atlante won 1-0 in Vancouver after Jhojan Julio scored in the 40th minute and goalkeeper Óscar Jiménez made multiple saves to preserve a clean sheet.
- The Whitecaps controlled much of the ball but failed to convert chances and saw several efforts turned away by Jiménez and blocked by Atlante’s defensive unit.
- Under the Leagues Cup league-phase format only the top four MLS and top four Liga MX teams advance to the quarterfinals which raises the value of each of Vancouver’s three group games.
- Vancouver now hosts FC Juarez next and finishes the group at Tigres on Aug. 11, so the club must regroup quickly while coping with roster disruption after Sebastian Berhalter’s transfer and several players returning from injury.
- Atlante’s tactical approach under Miguel Herrera—deep defensive shape and quick counterattacks—proved effective and highlights the new format’s small margin for error for favored MLS sides.
