Atherton Line Reopens After Burst Water Main Near Daisy Hill

Repairs at Daisy Hill allow trains to run again, with minor delays expected early morning.

Overview

  • National Rail reports all lines have reopened, with services between Wigan Wallgate and Salford Crescent subject to residual delays of up to 10 minutes until 8am Saturday.
  • Friday’s burst on Leigh Road damaged the railway embankment and track at Daisy Hill, leaving debris on the line and forcing cancellations and diversions via Bolton.
  • United Utilities isolated the burst and said water supplies in nearby areas were restored, as it coordinated with Network Rail on the rail infrastructure impact.
  • Replacement road transport operated between Wigan Wallgate and Salford Crescent but could not stop at Daisy Hill because of road closures, with stops moved to Westhoughton; Northern lifted ticket restrictions and Delay Repay applies.
  • Leigh Road outside the station was taped off Friday with visible damage to a lamppost and fence, and heavy traffic was reported in Westhoughton.
