At UN Security Council, India Rebukes Pakistan Over 'False' Operation Sindoor Claims

Pakistan’s criticisms at a Security Council debate prompted India to defend its response to the Pahalgam attack as lawful counterterrorism.

Overview

  • India’s UN envoy Parvathaneni Harish accused Pakistan of spreading falsehoods and trying to legitimise terrorism, saying the Council must not be a platform for such narratives.
  • Harish said Operation Sindoor in May 2025 was a measured, non-escalatory effort to dismantle terrorist infrastructure after the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians, which the Council had condemned.
  • He asserted that Pakistan threatened further attacks until May 9 and that on May 10 its military pleaded directly for a halt to fighting, citing images of damaged Pakistani airbases as evidence; these points were presented as India’s account.
  • India reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country and said Pakistan has no locus standi to comment on India’s internal matters.
  • Recalling prior steps, Harish said the Indus Waters Treaty remains in abeyance until Pakistan credibly ends support for cross-border terrorism, and he urged Islamabad to reflect on rule-of-law concerns raised by recent constitutional changes.
