Assen Court Shows Footage in Trial Over Coevorden Fatal Shooting

Prosecutors say both suspects fired, with German-recovered firearms central to the case as two more people are due to face trial later this year.

Overview

  • A 21-year-old man, Remmelt Wolters, was shot during an incident on the night of July 18–19, 2025 and later died in hospital.
  • Two suspects from Schoonebeek — a 24-year-old and a 17-year-old — are on trial with the elder hearing held in public and the minor’s case heard behind closed doors.
  • The court showed surveillance video in which five shots are audible and prosecutors say the shots came from two pistols that were used in the attack.
  • Investigators later located the two firearms in a forest across the German border, and prosecutors allege the shooting followed a dispute over drug dealing and an attempted abduction of an 18-year-old friend.
  • The public prosecutor has sought an 18-year prison term for the 24-year-old while asking for youth detention for the minor and the court is set to hand down its judgment in July.
