Assam–MP Wildlife Exchange to Bring Wild Buffalo Back to Kanha

WII-backed planning sets up a phased Kanha reintroduction pending statutory approvals.

Overview

  • Assam agreed to send 50 wild water buffaloes to Madhya Pradesh over three years, with reintroduction planned at Kanha Tiger Reserve.
  • A pair of one-horned rhinos and three king cobras from Assam will be housed initially at Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal.
  • Madhya Pradesh will provide Assam with a pair of tigers and six mugger crocodiles under the reciprocal pact.
  • Officials cited the Supkhar Range in Kanha as the initial release site, with the first buffalo batch targeted for February–March subject to clearances.
  • A Wildlife Institute of India study identified Kanha as the most suitable site, with predator-proof enclosures and acclimatisation infrastructure slated for early 2026 and genetic assessments reported to support the translocation.
