Assam to Activate Nationwide Cell Broadcast System for Real‑Time Disaster Alerts
State authorities say the move will give officials a fast, location-based way to warn phone users during storms, floods and other life‑threatening events.

- The Assam State Disaster Management Authority announced on June 4 that it would implement the central government’s Cell Broadcast System and state media reported the system was operational statewide on June 5.
- The system was developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics under the Department of Telecommunications in coordination with the National Disaster Management Authority and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
- Cell Broadcast sends instant, geo-targeted pop-up alerts that trigger a loud tone and vibration for about 30 seconds, can be read aloud on supported handsets, and works across 2G–5G and for roaming users.
- Officials say alerts will be issued only by authorised government agencies for genuine emergencies such as cyclones, floods, heavy rain, flash floods, storms, lightning or gas leaks and the public has been asked not to panic.
