State sources describe a Sutarkandi crossing under a new SOP based on the 1950 expulsion law.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said 12 people were identified in the early hours and pushed back as part of the Mission Clean Up campaign.
  • State sources told The Assam Tribune the operation used the Sutarkandi route in Karimganj, with most of those returned coming from the Matia holding camp.
  • Officials cited a cabinet-approved SOP under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950 that empowers district and police leadership to carry out expulsions.
  • State sources said more than 50 declared foreign nationals are likely to be pushed back within a month, with over 30 already returned after the change of regime in Bangladesh.
  • The latest pushback was reportedly executed without the knowledge of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Guwahati.
