Overview
- Six captive-bred and four rehabilitated white-rumped vultures were released from a pre-release aviary at Nalapara in the Rani Range, marking the first such release in Assam and the Northeast.
- All birds were ringed and fitted with solar-powered GPS transmitters for round-the-clock monitoring, with supplementary feeding to support acclimatisation.
- Project teams have analysed 150 of a targeted 800 cattle carcass samples within 100 km of the site, with no toxic NSAIDs detected so far.
- Five slender-billed vultures have been moved to a soft-release aviary near Kaziranga in Biswanath for acclimatisation ahead of a planned release in the coming months.
- The effort is led by the Assam Forest Department and BNHS with support from RSPB and other partners, backed by 2025–26 funding from Adani LGBI, and VCBC Rani now holds about 194 vultures for phased reintroductions.
