Assam CID Dismantles Alleged Cyber-Fraud Syndicate in Kamrup After Five Arrests

Police describe a bogus handloom training centre used to harvest women's KYC documents.

Overview

  • The CID’s Cyber Police Station arrested five suspects—Moinul Hoque, Moon Kalita, Kangakan Kalita, Hirak Jyoti Kalita and Mostakim Ahmed—during coordinated raids across Kamrup district.
  • A suo motu case (No. 01/2026) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered in connection with the operation.
  • Seized materials include KYC records for more than 1,000 people, 54 bank passbooks, 10 blank cheque books, five unused debit cards, about 1,000 unissued SIM cards and roughly 500 issued SIM card covers.
  • Investigators say the group illegally handled around 200 SIM cards, with preliminary analysis linking several seized numbers to SIMBOX activity and cyber fraud cases in other states.
  • The ongoing probe centers on identifying victims whose documents were misused and tracing beneficiaries of mule accounts to map wider interstate connections.
