Aspen Airport to Close for Most of 2027 for Full Runway Rebuild

The project will widen and realign the runway to meet FAA standards, enabling larger aircraft, initiating terminal construction and improving long‑term safety and reliability.

Overview

  • Aspen/Pitkin County Airport will be closed to all flights and terminal access from 11 p.m. on April 4, 2027 through 7 p.m. on November 19, 2027 so crews can complete the work.
  • The closure will allow a complete runway rebuild that shifts the pavement roughly 80 feet west, widens the runway from 100 feet to 150 feet and brings airfield geometry into current FAA centerline separation standards.
  • No commercial or general aviation operations will be permitted during the shutdown and an estimated 330,000–350,000 arriving and departing passengers are expected to use Eagle/Vail, Grand Junction, Montrose or Denver instead.
  • Construction of a new commercial terminal and a private‑jet facility will begin with the runway work in April 2027 but those new buildings are not expected to open until 2029, so ASE will reopen late in 2027 still using the existing terminal.
  • The runway changes are designed to remove the airport’s longstanding 95‑foot wingspan limit and could allow larger types such as the Airbus A220 to serve Aspen, although elevation, runway strength and terrain will continue to constrain some aircraft operations.
