Ashton Daniels Solidifies QB1 Role After FSU’s First Fall Scrimmage

Coaches said the scrimmage will sharpen depth choices after a JUCO transfer’s minor injury.

Florida State ran roughly 70–80 plays in a closed scrimmage at Doak Campbell Stadium on Aug. 4 to test sustained drives, red-zone work and situational decision-making.
Coaches praised Ashton Daniels for command, timely throws and pocket composure, and they treated him as the clear starter after the session.
JUCO transfer Malachi Marshall missed the scrimmage with a slight injury and is expected back next week, which temporarily handed more live reps to Kevin Sperry.
Defensive speed was a highlight with safety Ashlynd Barker standing out in the rover role, while the veteran offensive line drew positive notes and center Bradyn Welch-Joiner was singled out.
The team will head to its traditional UNF practice trip and hold a second scrimmage Sunday, Aug. 9, with coaches using those events to settle backup roles and assess players who missed Tuesday.
