Asda Sets Two-Stage Pay Rise to £13.10 as Retail Wage Race Quickens

The moves outpace the new £12.71 National Living Wage to signal fiercer competition for store staff.

Overview

  • Asda, which disclosed the plan Wednesday, will lift hourly pay for 110,000 store and Express staff to £12.71 on April 1 and to £13.10 on July 5, with rates inside the M25 rising to £13.93 and then £14.35.
  • The grocer said the award is a 4% rise that Asda values at £80 million this year, taking its retail pay investment since 2021 to £575 million.
  • Aldi will raise store assistant pay from April 1 to £13.50 nationwide and £14.88 inside the M25, a change the company says benefits 28,000 staff.
  • Primark will set a £13.00 minimum across the UK and £13.71 in London from April 1, covering more than 27,000 retail assistants.
  • Rival moves already in force include Sainsbury’s £13.23 national rate from early March, Tesco’s £13.28 from March 29, and Lidl’s early‑March step to £13.45 nationally and £14.80 in London.
