Asahi Linux Adds Official Support for Apple M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max

The change lets users boot native Linux on most M3 Macs today, signaling that substantial kernel and driver work remains to finish GPU and display features.

Overview

  • Asahi Linux merged M3-series support into its installer on Sunday and now officially supports Macs with M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips while excluding the M3 Ultra Mac Studio.
  • Most core hardware features already work, including the webcam, internal microphones, USB 3 at 10Gb/s, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and hardware video decoding with AV1 support.
  • Key limitations remain: the GPU lacks usable 3D acceleration and power efficiency, and missing DCP (display coprocessor) integration prevents sleep and disables HDMI output on affected MacBooks.
  • M3 support is currently gated behind the installer’s Expert mode with a documented install command for testers, and the project aims to remove the Expert requirement before the Fedora 45 beta.
  • Basic M3 boot support is now in the mainline Linux kernel while additional driver and DCP patches are being upstreamed toward Linux 7.4 and beyond, which will broaden distribution support and improve user experience over the coming months.
