Overview
- The Athletics designated veteran right-hander Aaron Civale for assignment on Thursday and opened roster spots by selecting right-hander Yunior Tur and promoting prospect Tommy White.
- Civale struggled this season with a 5.42 ERA over 74 2/3 innings and missed time with right shoulder tendinitis, and the DFA gives the club five days to trade him or move toward release.
- Tommy White, the club’s No. 7 prospect, was called up from Double-A/Triple-A and is expected to make his major-league debut Friday at Sutter Health Park after hitting .303 with an .818 OPS in the minors this year.
- Yunior Tur, a 26-year-old with a high-90s fastball and 64 strikeouts in 51 Triple-A innings, will join the pitching staff while the A’s also recalled lefty Brady Basso and activated utilityman Donovan Walton; Joey Meneses, Brian Serven and Mason Barnett were optioned to Triple-A.
- The moves come after a prolonged slump that dropped the A’s in the standings and signal a shift to evaluate young, controllable players as the team approaches the trade deadline and considers deadline selling.
