Arrested Man Seizes Dallas Squad Car and Jumps Onto Freeway

The Dallas Police Department has opened a probe to review the custody breach to assess public-safety and transport procedures.

Overview

  • Officers arrested a person after a traffic stop in the 2300 block of South Marsalis Avenue and began transporting the suspect to jail.
  • While the suspect was in the squad car the individual briefly gained control of the vehicle before the officer regained control on the R. L. Thornton Freeway near Beckley Avenue.
  • The suspect then jumped out of the moving vehicle onto the freeway and Dallas Fire-Rescue took both the suspect and the transporting officer to a hospital for treatment.
  • The officer suffered only minor injuries and was treated at the hospital, the suspect remains hospitalized, and the police department has not released the suspect’s name or any charges.
  • The Dallas Police Department is conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident to determine how the custody breach occurred and to inform any changes to transport practices.
