Arnoldo Jimenez Brought Back to U.S. Custody After 2025 Arrest in Mexico

U.S. prosecutors will now take over state murder and federal unlawful-flight cases as investigators have not disclosed a motive or set a court date

Overview

  • Estrella Carrera was found stabbed in the bathtub of her Burbank apartment less than 48 hours after her May 2012 wedding, and authorities issued state and federal warrants days later.
  • Jimenez spent more than a decade on the run and was added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list before he was captured in Monterrey, Mexico, on Jan. 30, 2025.
  • The transfer, which took place Thursday, brought Jimenez into FBI custody in Chicago and completes the move from Mexican detention to U.S. jurisdiction.
  • He faces a Cook County first-degree murder charge and a federal unlawful-flight-to-avoid-prosecution count, and prosecutors now control the case preparation.
  • Authorities credited Mexican law enforcement, Interpol and the Burbank police for the arrest and return, and officials have not released a motive or announced when Jimenez will first appear in U.S. court.
