Army Opens ‘Amazon-Like’ Drone Marketplace to Speed Purchases

The cloud storefront becomes the Army’s primary path for small and mid-size drones, using open competition to cut delays.

Overview

  • The marketplace, which opened Tuesday at AUSA Global Force in Huntsville, lists about 30 vetted Group 1–2 drones for immediate ordering.
  • Built with Amazon Web Services and the Army Enterprise Cloud Management Agency, the site is open to Pentagon buyers, other federal users and, potentially, allied partners as foreign sales options mature.
  • Army officials plan to scale to 70 or more listings soon and aim to add Group 3 aircraft by summer, a funding-dependent step for larger drones that can weigh up to 1,320 pounds.
  • Users can compare price, specs and right-to-repair details and then rate fielded drones on a five-star scale, giving vendors near-real-time feedback on what troops need.
  • Purchases run through Basic Ordering Agreements with continuous vendor onboarding via a standing Commercial Solutions Opening, which now takes about 30 days as the Army works to automate and shorten the process.
