Arlington ISD Votes to Close Blanton Elementary at School Year’s End

The move follows years of low TEA ratings that put the district at risk of state intervention.

Overview

  • The Board of Trustees approved the closure unanimously after a lengthy meeting Tuesday night.
  • District leaders cited steep enrollment declines, three straight F ratings and escalating costs to maintain the 69-year-old campus.
  • Officials proposed reassigning roughly 450 students to Burgin, Crow, Goodman and Swift, with bilingual students placed in campuses offering those programs and transportation provided for those living more than two miles away.
  • Trustees plan to notify the Texas Education Agency by Jan. 31 and to finalize receiving-campus assignments in February as part of an approximately eight-month process.
  • Facility assessments estimated $34.8 million in needed repairs and flagged flooding risk, and officials said most of the campus will be demolished after it closes.
