Overview
- Gilbert police say first responders were called at about 5:35 p.m. on Feb. 8 after a child was found unresponsive in a backyard pool.
- Life-saving measures continued at a local hospital, where the child was declared dead at approximately 6:20 p.m.
- Roughly five hours later, officials were notified the child showed signs of life and the patient was airlifted to another Phoenix-area hospital.
- Police report the child is expected to survive as the investigation proceeds, and the child’s identity and age have not been released.
- Emergency physician Dr. Frank LoVecchio, who was not involved in the case, cautioned about pronouncing death in children and suggested hypothermia can make vital signs hard to detect.
