Ariana Grande Crowds iTunes With Eight Versions of New Single

The staggered release of alternate takes is designed to boost sales totals to push the single to a No. 1 debut on the Billboard Hot 100.

Overview

  • Grande released the lead single “Hate That I Made You Love Me” as the first preview of her album Petal on May 29 and followed with a cinematic, horror-themed music video that premiered June 1 featuring Justin Long.
  • Over the first full tracking week she issued multiple alternate editions — including live from rehearsal, melody pass, ari lyric draft from bed, a cappella, instrumental, Guitar-Only and Stripped — across digital and physical formats.
  • Forbes reported that eight versions of the song appeared on the iTunes Top Songs chart during the initial tracking window, with Grande occupying the top five positions and several other takes inside the top 10.
  • Grande posted an Instagram message thanking fans for their support and asked which version they preferred as she leans on direct fan engagement to drive concentrated purchases and streams.
  • The campaign uses a common chart strategy of releasing similar-titled edits that Billboard aggregates for Hot 100 calculations, a tactic meant to maximize first-week sales and streaming totals ahead of Petal’s July 31 release.
