Argentine Workers Take Second Jobs as Pay Fails to Cover Basic Costs

A private Bumeran survey shows slower inflation has not restored real wages.

Overview

  • The Bumeran survey published Monday drew on more than 6,400 responses and found 87% of workers say their pay is insufficient to cover basic needs.
  • About 1.6 million people nationally now do pluriempleo, with roughly 131,000 in Tucumán reported seeking extra income despite low official unemployment.
  • Seventy-three percent of respondents said their salary lasts less than two weeks, 77% reported some form of debt, and 90% said they cannot save.
  • Seventy-four percent of workers said purchasing power worsened in recent months, up from 58% in 2025, and Bumeran’s CEO warned that slower inflation has not translated into real-wage recovery.
  • The findings show household budgets are consumed by rent, food and debt payments and point to likely policy debates over wages, housing costs and social support as families rely on extra jobs and family networks to cope.
