Argentine Lawmakers File Criminal Complaint Against Caputo Over CPI Method and Early Data Disclosure

The filing alleges political interference with INDEC’s CPI method, including premature disclosure that could breach statistical secrecy.

Overview

  • Deputies Julia Strada, Germán Martínez and Paula Penacca of Unión por la Patria lodged the complaint on February 13 in federal court.
  • It accuses Economy Minister Luis Caputo of violating duties of public office, breaching confidentiality, falsifying public documents and violating statistical secrecy under Law 17,622.
  • The lawmakers say he kept the 2004/05-based CPI weights despite an INDEC resolution to adopt a 2017–2018 survey-based basket from January 2026, allegedly to delay higher readings during tariff recomposition.
  • They also cite a post on X in which Caputo acknowledged methodological differences and previewed January’s result before release; INDEC later reported 2.9% month-on-month and 32.4% year-on-year.
  • The case was assigned to Federal Court No. 8 under Judge Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi, with the dispute carrying implications for pension indexation, social benefits and wage bargaining.
