Argentine Director and Cinematographer Juan Carlos Desanzo Dies at 88

His final public act was a defense of Argentina’s film industry before lawmakers earlier this month.

  • DAC confirmed his death on February 17, said no cause was disclosed, and noted his family will hold a private farewell.
  • Beginning in the 1960s as a cinematographer, he worked on landmark films including La hora de los hornos, Juan Moreira and La tregua, the first Argentine Oscar nominee.
  • From 1983 he emerged as a leading director and writer with works such as Eva Perón, El Polaquito, El desquite, En retirada, La búsqueda and Al filo de la ley.
  • On February 4 he addressed legislators to defend the audiovisual sector during the labor reform debate, recalling that Patricia Bullrich once supported his Eva Perón project.
  • His last feature, Verano amargo, was shot in 2009 in Villa Mercedes and released in 2011 with funding tied to Argentina’s film law.
