Argentina’s Wholesale Inflation Slows to 1.7% in January

Analysts see the gauge as a leading signal of easing costs, with February risks from food and oil.

Overview

  • INDEC reported a 1.7% monthly rise in the wholesale price index, putting the annual rate at 26.4% and marking a 0.7‑point slowdown from December’s 2.4%.
  • Domestic goods rose 1.7% and imports 1.5%, with primary products up 2.6%, manufactured goods 1.4%, and electricity 1.1%.
  • The largest increases were in agricultural goods (+4.1%), fishing products (+4.6%), and food and beverages (+2.4%).
  • Complementary indices that exclude taxes or focus on producer prices (IPIB and IPP) each increased 1.6% in January.
  • Wholesale inflation remained below consumer inflation (CPI 2.9% month‑on‑month and 32.4% year‑on‑year), and experts note IPIM often leads retail prices as early February food and oil gains could test disinflation.
