Argentina’s Poverty Line Reaches $1.36 Million in January as Food and Child Costs Outpace Inflation

Official basket measures climbed faster than the 2.9% CPI.

Overview

  • INDEC reported that a four-person household needed $1,360,299 to cover the Canasta Básica Total in January and $623,990 to meet the basic-food Canasta Básica Alimentaria.
  • The basic-food basket rose 5.8% month-on-month and the total basket increased 3.9%, both above the national inflation rate of 2.9%.
  • INDEC’s Canasta de Crianza put the monthly cost for a child aged 6–12 at $607,848, with the measure exceeding inflation and serving as a judicial reference for alimony by valuing goods, services and care time.
  • Provincial data showed variation: Mendoza’s DEIE set the Canasta Básica Total for a four-person family at $1,247,162 with the food basket at $517,497, up 5.6% and 6.5% from December, respectively.
  • Jujuy’s Dipec reported the sharpest monthly food rise in a year with the CBA up 6.4% and the CBT up 5.2%, placing local thresholds at $574,103 for indigence and $1,267,853 for poverty.
