Argentina’s Outbound Travel Drops for First Time Since 2024 as Inbound Rises

A stronger real exchange rate and weak incomes are cited for tempering Argentines’ summer trips abroad.

Overview

  • INDEC’s January 2026 data show 1,764,091 Argentines traveled abroad, an 8.5% year‑on‑year decline, while foreign arrivals in Argentina edged up 1.4% to 681,956.
  • Total movements closed with 1,070,800 inbound visitors versus 2,343,200 departures, producing a negative international tourism balance of 1,272,400 people.
  • Seasonally adjusted, non‑resident tourist arrivals rose 18.3% from December, indicating momentum in inbound travel despite the year‑on‑year outbound drop.
  • Outbound trips remained concentrated in neighboring countries (84.6%), led by Brazil (32.5%) and Chile (19.1%), with residents mostly exiting by land (56.7%) versus air (33.5%).
  • Inbound non‑resident tourists arrived mainly by air (48.8%), followed by land (39.6%) and fluvial/maritime routes (11.6%), and recent INDEC reports omit dollar inflow/outflow figures after a methodology dispute last year.
