Argentina’s Oilseed Workers Stage 24-Hour National Strike Over Labor Reform

The walkout targets the government’s labor bill as it advances toward a Senate vote.

Overview

  • The FTCIODyARA launched an active national stoppage from 00:00 on Feb. 11 and called a noon mobilization to Congress with a gathering point at Avenida de Mayo and Bernardo de Irigoyen in Buenos Aires.
  • Union leaders denounce the reform as regressive, saying it favors employers, weakens collective bargaining and workplace bodies, and limits the right to strike.
  • Following a Casa Rosada meeting, Senator Patricia Bullrich confirmed text changes and said the ruling coalition has the votes for an initial Senate approval, including adjustments to union contributions and the Labor Assistance Fund and dropping income tax changes.
  • Exporters’ groups Ciara and CIARA-CEC condemned the strike as an overreach, warning of risks to jobs, shipment delays, contract disruptions, and market confidence, and urging a return to negotiations.
  • The federation said the action forms part of a broader plan with FreSU and it will join today’s protest called by sectors of the CGT after earlier mobilizations in Córdoba and Rosario.
