Argentina’s Energy Sector Posts Record First-Quarter Results and Triggers Multibillion-Dollar RIGI Pipeline
Record corporate performance is prompting large RIGI-backed investments that could shift Argentina toward an exporter-led growth model.
Overview
- In early June YPF reported its strongest first quarter ever with net income of US$409 million, a record adjusted EBITDA of US$1,594 million, shale production averaging about 205,000 barrels per day and extraction costs cut to US$8.8 per boe.
- Energy exports rose sharply, with volumes up 53.2% and prices up 21.3%, producing a monthly energy trade surplus of US$1,402 million that accounted for roughly 52% of Argentina’s total trade surplus.
- The RIGI incentive framework has produced a wave of formal project filings and approvals, including YPF’s Loma La Lata Oil (US$25 billion), Chevron’s El Trapial (US$13.8 billion), Pampa Energía projects (over US$6.9 billion), the San Matías gas pipeline (US$1.3 billion) and PAE’s Cerro Dragón (US$680 million).
- Investors have priced the shift into markets: Argentine energy stocks outperformed global oil majors in May, led by YPF’s roughly 17.4% gain on the New York market after the company released its Q1 results and project plans.
- The near-term prize is higher export revenue, jobs and foreign capital, but those outcomes hinge on project financing, timely infrastructure build-out and regulatory and fiscal stability as the announced megaprojects move into planning and investment phases.
